fall/winter beauty

After last year’s flirtation with short hair and blunt bobs, I am slowly growing my hair out. For me, personally, short hair meant less maintenance, but this season I’m all about the maintenance. I am still using my favorite shampoo + conditioner and hair mask, but have since added this blow out balm to my hair care regime and the name says it all.

Other hair and beauty related things I am loving this fall/winter?

still very much into statement barrettes and black headbands

like this, this or this, and this.

matte lipstick and minimal (if any) eye makeup

my go-to matte lipstick (no. 62).

full, groomed brows, always

some days, this product is the only thing I put on my face.

easy chignons and low ponytails

a la CBK and Ashley O.

and a very strict skincare regime

my holy grail.

spring/summer beauty

With summer near (and welcoming east coast humidity and long days spent at the beach), I'm starting to think about what I want to do with my hair again — chop it off again, grow it out, get a keratin treatment? I go back and forth between a 90s Christy Turlington coiffed bob or easy, lived-in waves. The later requires much less maintenance but I do love a sleek blow out.

Ever since cutting my hair into a chin-length bob, I have discovered a love for hair accessories. Clips, barrettes, bobby pins, hair ties. It's fun way to play with hair (especially on uncooperative hair days), and I love that they sort of act as jewelry, like my new pearl barrette that can dress up any look.

As for hair care, I've recently gone back to this shampoo and conditioner ('LOVE' for wavy hair) and this hair mask ('NOUNOU'). I'm not sure why I ever departed from this sustainable brand in the first place because not only does it smell amazing, but it's incredibly gentle on my hair, leaving it soft and nourished, even in the driest of months. Also, how chic is the packaging?

My hair color is 100% natural, therefore I get bored easily and think of my hair as an accessory. How I decide to style or cut it is entirely based upon the season, and what I'm wearing or where I'm traveling.

One thing I've grown to love about my chin-length bob is sweater weather (see CÉLINE Fall / Winter 17 below for reference — I have major hair envy of model Giedre Dukauskaite). It feels instantly chic. Some days I want to show off my neck in a crewneck knit (presumedly good hair days), while other days I want to hide it (along with my cowlick) in a turtleneck.

New year, new hair, new you. And PS it always grows back.

I recently gathered the courage to finally cut my hair the length that I've been wanting to try for months. This new length (that everyone seems to be into) isn't a first for me, but my neck and ears haven't been exposed this much in years.

Prior to booking my appointment, I talked to a lot of girlfriends and Instagram friends, and collectively we agreed every girl should try short hair (whatever 'short' means to you) at least once — especially if you're over the age of 30.

I'm always up for trying something new, even if I feel uncomfortable (like walking around NYC all day with my post-cut blowout — yikes! I prefer second or third day hair). But, honestly, how else do we discover new things, or find what works well and what doesn't? I think there's great value in continuing to evolve my appearance and look.

I think women tend to overlook their hair when feeling uninspired with their wardrobe or getting dressed. January and February (and much of March, if you live on the east coast) are cold and dreary, so why not save money on discounted fall clothing that you really don't need, and instead treat yourself to a haircut with a pro-stylist?

Last week I showed my hair stylist a photo of Nastjassa Kinski's natural wavy bob in Paris, Texas, and asked for the same short, sassy cut. This haircut requires little maintenance to achieve that 'undone' look (hello air dry!), and having not gone this short in a few years I never want to look back. Since embracing my new bob, I also find myself wearing more bodysuits, turtlenecks and crew necklines that accentuate my face and elongated neck.

In order to maintain a healthy mane, I'm currently loving this moisturizing hair mask by Aesop, which is much needed for the colder, dryer months ahead. It's a light, soothing mask that I find works well on my thick, non-treated, short hair. Once shampoo and conditioned (I only use sulfate-free products, which deplete moisture), I section off my hair into four parts and set with these clips to air dry overnight — this simple technique creates a natural wave. The next morning I then brush it out (love Ibiza's line of hairbrushes) and spritz with my favorite anti-frizz spray by Philip B. Easy!

As for beauty, I've also been playing up my eyeshadow, skipping eyeliner, and as always, playing up a strong brow that gives my new 'do a little more sass. This inexpensive brow gel, by the way, is my key to a perfect brow. I first fill in my brows with my favorite brow pencil, then brush my brows upwards with the gel to create a full, natural look.

Right now, Bobbi Brown's long-wear cream shadow stick is my favorite cream shadow for creating a foolproof (and subtle) bronze-y eye. For daytime, I love Sunlight Gold, a soft, golden shimmer, and for an evening look, I lightly layer Golden Bronze on top and blend both shadows with my index finger. These shadows are also ideal for traveling, with no palettes or brushes required.

Lastly, with such fair skin, I always skip bronzer and highlighter in the cooler months, and instead reach for a warm blush with terracotta undertones. This is my favorite winter blush by Laura Mercier in Spiced Cider, and I find that it adds a nice, natural warmth to my NC10 skin tone.
